2011 RTA Project Bulletins

11.16.11 - A new signal light will be installed at the intersection of Valencia Road and Alvernon Way between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. On Nov. 28, the contractor will begin milling the area of Valencia Road and Alvernon Way in preparation of final paving, which is expected to occur Dec. 5 to Dec. 9. The RTA project is managed by Pima County Department of Transportation.

11.16.11 - Starting on Nov. 16, electric crews will begin installing new traffic signal poles and mast arms at all four corners of the Speedway Boulevard and Houghton Road intersection. The work is expected to be completed by 4 p.m. Nov. 17. During the work, Tucson police officers will direct traffic. The RTA project is managed by the Tucson Department of Transportation.

11.04.11 - The pedestrian path along the east side of the Canada del Oro wash at Magee Road is closed for construction of a new bridge over the wash. This is part of the Cortaro Farms Road/Magee Road: Thornydale Road to Oracle Improvement Project, from Shannon Road to Thornydale Road (Phase II). The path is expected to be closed until May 2012. This RTA project is managed by Pima County.

11.01.11 - Several utility companies are performing utility relocation activities for the La Canada Road, Ina Road to River Road, improvement program. Construction of the project is expected to being in spring 2012. The RTA project is managed by the Pima County Department of Transportation.

10.07.11 - Work crews will begin removing asphalt and begin paving the Golf Links Road and Kolb Road intersection on Monday, Oct. 10, through Friday, Oct. 14. Final striping is scheduled to take place on Monday, Oct. 17, and Tuesday, Oct. 18. Other related work is expected to be completed by Friday, Oct. 21, and the project is expected to be completed later this month. For more project details, click here. 10.07.11 - Construction will begin on Monday, Oct. 10, to improve the Sabino Canyon Road and Tanque Verde Road intersection. This work is expected to be completed in August 2012. The RTA project is managed by the Tucson Department of Transportation.

09.22.11 - Final striping on La Canada, Ina to La Concordia, will occur Sept. 22 and 23. The RTA project is managed by Pima County.

08.15.11 - Traffic signals a the intersection of La Cholla Boulevard and eastbound Magee will be replaced with a 3-way stop. Traffic approaching the area will be required to stop and then proceed through the area with caution. The current southbound lane closures in place on La Cholla Boulevard between Magee Road and Foothills Mall Drive will remain in effect. Traffic on westbound Magee will be reduced to two travel lanes, one in each direction. All left-turn lanes will be restricted during this phase of construction. This traffic control will remain in place until late fall 2011. This RTA project, Cortaro Farms Road/Cortaro Road, Thornydale to Oracle, is managed by Pima County Department of Transportation

05.23.11 -  Starting at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 23, through 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, work will be performed on sewer lines from La Canada, north of Ina Road, between San Anna Drive and Chapala Drive. Southbound travel will be restricted to one lane during the evening work. The RTA project, La Canada Drive, Ina Road to Calle Concordia, is managed by Pima County Department of Transportation.

05.09.11 - Final paving on La Cholla Boulevard, from Ruthrauff Road to River Road and at the intersection of Ruthrauff and La Cholla, will begin on May 9 and is expected to be completed by May 13. Paving will occur between 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The RTA project is managed by Pima County.

2010 Bulletins 

11.15.10 - On Sunday, Nov. 21, paving will continue on Continental Road, from the U.S. Post Office west to the traffic signal at the southbound Interstate 19 frontage road, on both eastbound and westbound lanes. Paving will be completed by 6 p.m. Nov. 21. The RTA project is managed by Pima County.

10.25.10 - Traffic will be detoured northbound and southbound starting Oct. 25 on La Cholla Boulevard over to the new southbound bridge from Curtis to River Road. A temporary traffic signal will be installed at River Road to assist with the new temporary traffic switch. The RTA project is managed by Pima County.

10.01.10 - Work crews will begin milling the center turn lane on Campbell Avenue, from Lind Road to Hedrick Drive, on Oct. 11. After the milling is complete, crews will begin reconstructing the subgrade in preparation to repave the center turn lane and the west side of Campbell Avenue. The work is scheduled to be completed in about two weeks. During the work, the Campbell Avenue and Fort Lowell Road intersection traffic signals will be adjusted to a four-way stop with one travel lane in each direction and left turns in all four directions. 09.07.10
- Vehicular access to the eastbound ramp from northbound Mission Road to Starr Pass Boulevard, connecting to Interstate 10, will be closed for approximately 60 days. The closure will allow for reconstruction of a new access ramp and other improvements. Motorists are advised to use Silverlake Road to access I-10 and the I-10 frontage roads. The RTA project is managed by the City of Tucson. 

08.12.10 - Work to improve the intersection of Mission Road/Grande Avenue and Starr Pass Boulevard will begin on Monday, Aug. 16. The $2.9 million project will feature a new additional travel lane from the northbound Mission Road ramp to eastbound Starr Pass Boulevard, new drainage facilities, new sidewalks, improved bicycle lanes, new street lights, new asphalt and new landscaping. The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2011. The RTA funded project is managed by the City of Tucson.

08.03.10 - Concrete will be poured between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. starting on the evening of Aug. 5 to form the bridge deck on the southbound lanes (west side of the roadway) on Sabino Canyon Road Bridge at Tanque Verde Creek. The Pima County project is funded with RTA funds and federal economic stimulus funds. The bridge project is expected to be completed within six weeks.

07.23.10 - The Arizona Department of Transportation activated a new traffic signal at the Twin Peaks Road and Coachline Boulevard intersection in Continental Ranch as part of the Twin Peaks interchange project.

06.17.10 - Pavement will be applied on Ina Road east and west of La Canada on the newly widened eastbound and westbound lanes. On June 18, Ina Road will be opened to four lanes of traffic (two lanes in each direction) with designated left-turn lanes for east and west bound Ina Road. A main traffic switch for La Canada is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 21.

06.09.10 - Travel lane restrictions begin today at the intersection of Golf Links and Wilmot roads. The project will include a dedicated right turn lane on eastbound Golf Links Road and a new bus pullout at the southwest corner of the intersection. The project is expected to be completed in late September or early October.

06.07.10 - Traffic on northbound and southbound Houghton Road at Old Vail Road will be shifted slighly to the west June 7 and June 8 in preparation for paving of the intersection. On June 9 through June 11, the traffic will be shifted to the east.

- The City of Tucson and Oregon Iron Works Inc. signed a contract to begin manufacturing seven modern streetcar vehicles for the modern streetcar line, which should be operational in 2013. For more information, visit www.TucsonStreetcar.info

06.01.10 - All traffic on Tanque Verde Road, from Catalina Highway to Houghton Road, will be detoured onto the north side (west bound lanes) of the roadway while construction work begins on the south side (east bound lanes) of the roadway. The RTA project is managed by Pima County Department of Transportation.

05.20.10 - A new bus pullout will be constructed on the west side of Alvernon Way in the westbound travel lanes of Broadway with construction starting on May 24 and continuing through August. Crews will be working from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. When the project is completed, the travel lanes on Broadway will be shifted to the south in order to accommodate the bus pullout.

During construction, Broadway will be reduced to two travel lanes in each direction between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. After 3 p.m., all travel lanes in each direction will be open to traffic. This Regional Transportation Authority project will be managed by the City of Tucson.

- A new bus pullout will be constructed on the west side of Alvernon Way in the westbound travel lanes of Broadway with construction starting on May 24 and continuing through August. Crews will be working from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. During construction, Broadway will be reduced to two travel lanes in each direction between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. After 3 p.m., all travel lanes in each direction will be open to traffic. This Regional Transportation Authority project will be managed by the City of Tucson.

05.12.10 - A traffic control shift on Sabino Canyon Road Bridge at the Tanque Verde Creek started today in order to accommodate work on the north bound bridge over the next three months. All traffic will be shifted to the southbound lanes (west side of the roadway) while construction is performed on the north bound lanes (east side of the roadway) of the bridge.

05.10.10 - Starting today, construction begins on roadway improvements along 22nd Street, between Camino Seco and Harrison Road, to add bicycle lanes to eastbound and westbound 22nd Street. The project is expected to be completed in approximately six weeks.

- Starting today, construction will begin on a bike lane for Tanque Verde Road, between Houghton Road and Fennimore Avenue. The project includes a six-foot wide bike lane/shoulder on both sides of the roadway. The project is expected to be completed in mid-July.

05.10.10 - Starting today, traffic on Ina Road will be shifted to the westbound lanes (north side of Ina) from the eastbound lanes (south side of Ina). This traffic detour will be in effect for approximately two months. The widening project on La Canada, Ina Road to Calle Concordia, is expected to be completed in fall 2011.

05.10.10 - Construction for roadway improvements will begin May 10 along 22nd Street, between Camino Seco and Harrison Road, to add bicycle lanes to eastbound and westbound 22nd Street. Construction will continue for six weeks. This project is managed by the City of Tucson.

05.03.10 - Construction is under way to improve the Golf Links Road and Wilmot Road intersection. The project is scheduled to be completed in late September or early October. 

03.24.10 - Construction begins on Tanque Verde, Catalina Highway to Houghton Road, to widen to a 4-lane roadway with bike lanes and sidewalks. Construction is expected to be completed in 15 months. The project is managed by Pima County.

2009 Bulletins

  • December 9, 2009 - Construction is under way on La Canada, from Ina Road to Calle Concordia. Pima County and the RTA celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony. The project is expected to be completed in 22 months.
  • October 2009 - Construction completed on Sun Tran Bus Storage and Maintenance Facility at 3920 N. Sun Tran Blvd.
  • September 2009 - Construction begins on Sahuarita Road, Interstate 19 to La Villita
  • August 2009 - Construction begins on Camino de Manana, Tangerine Road to Linda Vista (Groundbreaking held Oct. 21, 2009)
  • August 2009 - Intersection Improvements begin at Wilmot and Park Place
  • July 2009 - Pima County breaks ground on I-19 frontage road project at Continental in Green Valley
  • June 2009 - Intersection construction begins at Houghton and Old Vail
  • May 2009 - Partners start Twin Peaks interchange on I-10
