Oracle Road/State Route 77 Wildlife Crossing Structures

Wildlife crossing structures are expected to be built on Oracle Road/State Route 77 at a cost of $8.2 million in RTA funding.

The structures include:

  • an underpass that is 32 feet wide by 12 feet high by 190 feet long. This structure will link Catalina State Park to Big Wash.
  • an underpass that is 50 feet wide by 12 feet high by 190 feet long. This structure will link Catalinea State Park to Big Wash and open space to the north. This location was identified as having the highest rate of wildlife and vehicle collisions by the AGFD Roadkill Study of Oracle Road and the Sky Island Alliance Roadkill database.
  • an overpass that is150 feet wide by 20 feet high by 190 feet long. This structure will link state land, leased to the Arizona Department of Corrections, on the east side of State Route 77 to state and county land currently used as a refuse transfer station. The linkage extends to Catalina State Park to the east and Tortolita Mountain Park to the west. The state land between these areas, which includes the Big Wash, is being considered for purchase by Pima County for open space. The choice of an overpass was done to address connectivity for multiple species in an area where the terrain does not allow for an underpass. Construction on Oracle Road from Tangerine to Pinal County is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2013.
